UPDATE BELOW:
While two wheels good, four wheels would be a LOT better.

Couple #2 sold their non-touring motorcycle last year because they wanted to upgrade to a touring bike. I’m glad, because wife #2 was only good for a three hour day with the little pillion they had on their bike. While I liked his Dyna, it would have been miserable for this trip.

We have had a rough !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and hotel reservations for a while. Four days riding to get there, a few days there,4-5 days 5-6 days to return.
Thinking ahead, I bought Mrs McMike a rain suit, so we’re good to go. The only problem for us was when I showed her how much room she had to work with, and that she had to pack for two weeks in sissy bar luggage.
We got together the other day and hammered out some more details about the trip, and even added in the Tail of the Dragon on our return trip.
The only detail we haven’t figured out yet is what motorcycle they are going to to ride, since they have not picked one up yet. We leave on Aug 1.
Nine days until the 3600 mile shake-down run on whatever he finds.
Nine. Days.
Update:
Just got a text from couple #2, a (decent) used bike dealership just quoted him $15.8K out the door for a sweet 2010 FLHTK with about 20K miles. 30 day warranty and a full service.
Retail sale of these are all over the place from $16-20K, so of course I told him to drop what he was doing and go get it.
While these Ultras have too much fiberglass for my tastes, these Limited models are really nice, and I don’t have to worry about helping him source a backrest and luggage rack in under a week.
I’ll still ask him to get a list of what was included in the “full service” in case there is anything we need to knock out in the next week.
He’s going to go take a look at it on Saturday. We are one step close to #2couples2bikes

I didn’t know you rode... What do you and the Mrs have?
I have a Ducati 748 I need to sell and get something more upright.... I think the (current) Multistrada is sexy

What kinda bike are you riding?
Be careful on the Dragon. There’s idjits abound there from what I’m told, especially on the weekends.
Also, the mountains in WV are amazing, have fun there. Just remember to bring a banjo, and make sure you play it really aggressively, in order to assert your dominance over potentially undesirable locals.

My roommate and his girlfriend are going to sturgis too. He’s trying to talk me into it, but that’s a long haul on my little Buell.
If you see a fairly goofy, balding, lanky dude in his mid-20’s on a blue Kawasaki Vulcan 900 ask him about the time he/we got kicked out of a Hooter’s in Nashville

Holy crap. And I thought my recent trip was epic. I haven’t looked closely at your route, but you might consider trying to work in I-64 east from Charleston through WV and onto I-81 at Lexington, VA. When we drove from DC to Lexington, KY, we went west on I-66 and took I-81 south through the Valley then hung a right onto I-64. The stretch from Lexington to Charleston is one of the most beautiful interstates I have ever driven. Not much traffic, great road surface, and my God, the mountains. Crossing the New River Valley is stunning. But being a mostly-native Virginian, I’ve always had a soft spot for the mountains of VA, and I see you’ve already planned to run all of 81 in VA. That’s a great road too. Have fun, and be safe.

That route will be run CCW. It’s a rough route I made for that image only, but it’s pretty close. We’re going to try to stay off the highway as much as time will allow us.
Now, about that second motorcycle.... :)

The Dragon also isn’t on my bucket list, but (like Sturgis) it’s something I’d like to see at some point. We’re both going to be on fully loaded Touring Harleys with passengers, we’re in no hurry. I hope we do it on a weekday to cut down on some traffic.

If you stop by KC you should hit me up, we got a couple of people here that I’m sure would be more than happy to meet and have a brew or some food while you travel.

Ride the Badlands, Iron Mountain Rd, Needles Hwy, and Spearfish Canyon. Ride by Mount Rushmore but don’t bother trying to park. Where are you staying?
(South Dakota born and raised, now in Minnesota. Did the Sturgis thing a few years back)

We’re staying in one of the canyons to the west (might actually be Spearfish) We’ll try to do as much of that shit as we can in four days.

Here’s the best part. All of things I mentioned you can do in a day. Or two mornings (Sturgis is pretty tame before noon). You can take a loop heading west from Keystone (taking you past Mt. Rushmore) then south down Needles Hwy (you’ll want to do that early as it is one-way traffic through the “eye of the needle” and everything gets backed up there). Then either west and back north to go see Crazy Horse or east to get to the bottom of Iron Mountain Rd, which will take you back north to Keystone.
Pro Tip: Do Iron Mountain Rd South to North. There is a tunnel you go through that frames Mt Rushmore perfectly.
(Sorry for possibly overloading you with information)
